The buying question

Would you rather build and try the buggy’s flex steering and rear suspension, or the Lamborghini’s opening doors and replica V10, and how much display length can you spare?

The 42164 combines a moving 4-cylinder engine with flex steering and rear suspension in a model listed at 17 cm long, 11 cm wide and over 9 cm high. The 42196 combines a replica V10 with steering and opening doors in a model listed at 28 cm long, 12 cm wide and over 8 cm high. LEGO’s listed dimensions make the Lamborghini model longer, while the two sets offer different functions to handle and display.

Quick verdict

When the recommendation changes
  • Measure the actual shelf or play area against LEGO’s listed built-model dimensions; the 42196 is listed at 28 cm long versus 17 cm for the 42164.
  • If a specific moving feature matters most, compare the feature list rather than treating either set’s engine type or size as a measure of build difficulty or quality.

The differences that matter

Build Mechanisms And Play Functions

LEGO Technic Off-Road Race Buggy 42164

LEGO lists a moving 4-cylinder engine, flex steering and rear suspension.[1]

LEGO Technic Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica Orange 42196

LEGO lists a replica V10 engine, steering and opening doors.[2]

What this changes: Choose based on which documented mechanisms you want to assemble and try: suspension and flex steering on the buggy, or doors and the replica V10 on the Lamborghini. The feature lists do not establish build difficulty, durability or how enjoyable either model is.[1, 2]

LEGO Technic Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica Orange 42196

LEGO lists the built model at 28 cm long, 12 cm wide and over 8 cm high.[2]
