Sterilite 1245 vs Rubbermaid Hip-Hugger: Which Fits Your Routine?

Choose Sterilite for grip access on all four sides; choose Rubbermaid for its hip-contoured side and three-grip layout. Before ordering for a fixed opening, confirm the basket’s dimensions in your intended orientation: Rubbermaid’s published numbers do not label length, width or height. Neither layout proves greater carrying comfort.

The buying question

Which basket matches how you want to carry laundry and the rigid opening where you plan to store it?

Sterilite offers grip access on four sides; Rubbermaid offers three grips and a hip-contoured side. Either preference must also pass a separate storage-opening check.

Quick verdict

When to skip: Neither basket clears your storage opening and insertion path with room to handle it
When the recommendation changes
  • A storage opening rules out your preferred grip layout.
  • You rotate the basket for storage, changing which dimension faces the opening.
  • Trying the grip with a representative load changes your preference.

The differences that matter

Grip Arrangement

Sterilite 12458012 Rectangular Laundry Basket, White

Contoured grip surfaces on all four sides[1, 2]

Rubbermaid FG299587WHTRB Hip-Hugger Laundry Basket, White

Three grips and a side shaped for carrying against the hip[3]

What this changes: Choose Sterilite if you want grip access from every side. Choose Rubbermaid if a hip-contoured side is the feature you want. These layouts do not establish which feels better with your laundry load.[1, 2, 3]

The better fit depends on your priorities

External Storage Envelope

Sterilite 12458012 Rectangular Laundry Basket, White

24 × 17.375 × 10.375 inches (length × width × height), per Sterilite[1, 2]

Rubbermaid FG299587WHTRB Hip-Hugger Laundry Basket, White

21.15 × 19.91 × 11.16 inches as listed; Rubbermaid does not label the length, width and height axes[3]

What this changes: Sterilite labels length, width and height; Rubbermaid gives an unlabeled dimension sequence. For a fixed opening, confirm which measurement belongs to each direction on the actual basket, then match its intended orientation to the clear opening and usable depth. Allow insertion, rim and hand clearance; a nominal match is not a fit guarantee.[1, 2, 3]

Storing the basket inside a fixed cubby or shelf opening

The better fit depends on your priorities

First measure the opening and usable space behind it. Match the actual basket’s dimensions to the intended orientation, especially for Rubbermaid’s unlabeled measurements, and check the insertion path and room to grasp the rim. A basket that fails this check should not win on grip preference alone.

Value and trade-offs

One or both observed offers have eligibility conditions, so no unrestricted price difference is shown.

Pay more only if the grip arrangement or storage fit solves a practical problem for you. A higher price alone does not establish better construction.

There is insufficient verified price history to judge whether either current offer is unusually good.

Limitations

  • Sterilite lists a 17.375-inch width in both its current model page and 2017 catalog; the product listing information checked for this comparison says 17.25 inches. We use the manufacturer value. For a close fit, measure the actual basket and opening, including the insertion path and hand clearance.
  • Rubbermaid’s page gives conflicting capacity figures, so this comparison does not rank how much laundry the baskets hold. Exterior dimensions do not establish usable interior volume.
  • No hands-on or comparable load testing was performed. Grip count and shape do not establish a comfort, safety, load-strength or durability winner.

Questions shoppers ask

What should I measure before buying for a shelf?

Measure the opening’s clear width and height, usable depth behind it, and the route the basket must take into place. Confirm which basket measurement runs in each direction, particularly for Rubbermaid’s unlabeled figures, then check both horizontal orientations. Allow room to grasp and withdraw the rim, including any door hardware or shelf edges in the clearance check.
