Weber Master-Touch vs. Original Kettle Premium: Grate and Lid-Setup Differences

For GBS accessories as a clearly listed feature, Master-Touch 14501001 is the more explicit fit. Original Kettle Premium 14401001 is not shown as GBS-incompatible: Weber lists the compatible #8835 grate as an additional part for this model. For lid handling and placement, choose between Tuck-Away and the bowl hook, then compare closed dimensions with your space.

The buying question

Do the Master-Touch's listed GBS-compatible grate and Tuck-Away lid holder suit you better than the Premium's bowl hook and published dimensions, or can the Premium's optional GBS grate cover your need?

Master-Touch explicitly documents GBS compatibility on its listed grate; Premium has a hinged standard grate and Weber separately lists compatible GBS grate #8835 as an additional part. Their lid-resting designs and closed dimensions also differ.

Quick verdict

When to skip: You need a gas/electric grill or a compact portable cooker rather than a full-size 22-inch charcoal kettle.
When the recommendation changes
  • If Weber or the seller confirms #8835 is included in the exact Premium bundle, the GBS reason to prefer Master-Touch narrows; compare lid arrangement and dimensions instead.
  • If your measured placement/storage area does not accommodate one model's closed dimensions, that can outweigh the grate preference. Allow for any extra clearance required by Weber and local conditions.

The differences that matter

Grate And Insert Workflow

Weber 22-inch Master-Touch Charcoal Grill, Black (14501001)

The exact 14501001 listing says its hinged cooking grate fits circular Gourmet BBQ System (GBS) grillware.[1]

Weber 22-inch Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill, Black (14401001)

The exact 14401001 page specifies a hinged plated-steel grate; its schematic separately lists the #8835 GBS grate as an Additional Part. Weber says #8835 is for GBS inserts and includes a 12-in plated insert. Verify whether #8835 is included in the particular retail bundle.[2, 3, 4]

What this changes: If GBS insert use matters, the Master-Touch listing explicitly confirms compatibility for its listed grate. Premium is not documented as incompatible: Weber lists a compatible GBS grate as an additional part, so verify bundle contents rather than assuming it is supplied.[1, 3, 4]

The better fit depends on your priorities

Lid Resting And Stand Setup

Weber 22-inch Master-Touch Charcoal Grill, Black (14501001)

Weber 22-inch Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill, Black (14401001)

The 14401001 page specifies a hook that hangs the lid on the bowl; closed dimensions are 39.5 H x 22.5 W x 27 D in.[2]

What this changes: Choose by the documented lid-parking arrangement and compare the closed dimensions with your own storage/placement measurements. These product dimensions are not required ventilation or safety clearances.[1, 2]

Value and trade-offs

One or both observed offers have eligibility conditions, so no unrestricted price difference is shown.

Check exact models and included parts before weighing any live price difference. Master-Touch's documented GBS-ready grate and lid holder may matter to some buyers; Premium's compatible #8835 grate is listed separately. No fixed price threshold follows from these feature differences.

The available product data provides current-only price context; check live offers for the exact model and bundle. There is not enough price history for a buy-now or wait recommendation.

Limitations

  • This is a manufacturer-documentation comparison; neither grill was hands-on tested.

  • Price context is current-only and does not establish historical value or best purchase timing.

Questions shoppers ask

Can the Original Kettle Premium 14401001 use Weber GBS inserts?

Weber's exact-model schematic lists the #8835 GBS hinged grate under Additional Parts, and Weber says #8835 is for GBS inserts and fits 22-inch charcoal grills. Check whether that grate is in the selected bundle or must be obtained separately.

These are closed-product dimensions, not clearance requirements. Measure your intended space and separately follow Weber's applicable setup guidance.
